Understanding new colors in urban environments: Deciphering colors as semiotic resources

Since the start of new millennium, more diverse color expressions have appeared in design urban environments, especially global cities. In this article, notion “new colors” refers to emergence saturated colors and ways using them environments globally. With impact globalization disengagement from local materials, existing approaches seem be insufficient explain dynamic changes design. To understand emerging colors”, article proposes viewing environmental as a social semiotic resource. Adapted Gunther Kress Theo van Leeuwen's model color, is developed identify “grammars color” particular focus on landscape designs completed between 2000 2019, five main practices were identified: branding communication, interventions, sports recreation, traffic historical post-industrial sites. The analysis these resources suggests that color's role communication emphasized space nowadays. Furthermore, growth environment may driven by needs interests different sociocultural groups.
